As a parent what can you do?

As a parent you want the best for your child. If you have a child that is obese it is definitely not to late to act now. Shape it Up has a list of ideas and strategies that parents can do to encourage their children to stay fit and healthy.
Here is a list of ideas and strategies a parent can follow to help their child
1. Encourage healthy eating, when parents go shopping make sure plenty of healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables are purchased.
2. Avoid purchasing unhealthy foods such as fatty and sugary foods, dont take it away from the children for good, just give it to them as a treat once and a while.
3. Do physical activities with your children, enroll them into a sports program that they enjoy doing or go for frequent walks during the week.
4. Being obese can cause a child to have low self-esteem so parents need to make sure they are supporting their child and making them feel loved and appreciated at all times.
5. Cook healthy recipes at home (list of healthy recipes found on page 5)
6. Let your child see that you enjoy eating healthy foods and doing physical activity. This may allow them to follow your footsteps.
7. Limit the time when children are using electronic devices such as t.v's, computers and game consoles.
8. Parents can figure out ways to make their child's favourite dish healthier.
9. Make the plate look appealing, use different coloured vegetables and fruits which will get the child's attention and persuade them to eat healthy.
10. Get your child involved by allowing him or her to help you prepare the meals.
11. Feed your children food that are wholegrain and high in fibre because your child will become full.
